Pig traps

Overview

Pig trap operations involves the launching and receiving pipeline pigs, it’s amongst the most sequentially complex and potentially hazardous procedures within the oil and gas and petrochemical industries.

A pig trap interlock sequence can involve dozens of valves that must be operated in a precise order, with each step verified before the next can proceed. Any deviation from the correct sequence risks catastrophic consequences: uncontrolled product release, high-pressure exposure, environmental contamination and serious injury.

The challenge

Pig trap procedures typically involve multiple isolation valves, drain valves, vent valves, bypass valves and the closure door itself. Written procedures alone cannot guarantee correct execution, human error, time pressure, shift changes and unfamiliarity with equipment all contribute to procedural failures.

The closure door cannot be opened until all isolation and depressurisation steps have been completed and verified.
